For his sixth Gucci collection, marking one year since his debut, Sabato De Sarno continues to explore the iconic codes of the emblematic house that turned it into a staple of Italian fashion.
"A year later, this collection shows an accomplished journey of construction. Moment after moment, I have built my ideas for Gucci. A casual grandeur that takes shape through my obsessions - tailoring, lingerie, leather, 60’s silhouettes, all combined with the tireless exploration of the heritage of this brand - and always with an irreverent attitude,” explained Sabato De Sarno backstage at Triennale Milano, where the show took place (same location as the menswear show back in June).
Denim, loose trousers and jackets stolen from men's wardrobes, but also the iconic Gucci Ancora Red, classic minis and A-line skirts from the 60s and coats adorned with GG motif were omnipresent in the collection. So was the Gucci Bamboo bag (a nod to the bestseller model with a hand-curved bamboo handle that was first created in 1947) in more casual leather versions and precious hand-embroidered options for those special occasions, where you want to be seen. There were also the Horsebit loafers (yes, another bestseller) and the Gucci Flora foulard, tied as a headscarf, in its original version as designed by illustrator Vittorio Accornero de Testa. De Sarno is betting on the eternal classics, and he might have found the right path to the clients' hearts.
“It's about a precise moment in time. A moment to seize and live to the fullest. It’s the moment the sun dives into the sea at the end of an August day. It’s the moment we find ourselves. This collection is a tribute to those moments, and an invitation to stop, and seek your own moment,” continued Sabato De Sarno, who walked the red Ancora catwalk at the end of the show, smiling and singing along to Fiordaliso’s “Non Voglio Mica La Luna".
The collection was filled with powerful statement pieces, easy-to-wear, casually sexy and endlessly elegant, that have become synonymous with De Sarno's Gucci. Meaning that 12 months after his very first show for Gucci, he has finally found his voice.
