S.T. Dupont Revives Jackie Kennedy’s Classique Pen

This March, S.T. Dupont unveils a new take on its legendary Classique pen, a design that redefined luxury writing instruments over 50 years ago. Originally created in 1972 as a bespoke commission for Jackie Kennedy, the Classique has now been reimagined with a bolder silhouette, refined proportions, and exquisite finishes, bringing timeless elegance into the modern era. S.T. DUPONT

Founded in 1872 by Simon Tissot-Dupont, S.T. Dupont began as a workshop specializing in luxury leather goods, catering to elite clients such as Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie. The brand expanded its repertoire in 1941 by introducing the first luxury petrol lighter, a product that became emblematic of S.T. Dupont's commitment to craftsmanship and innovation. In 1973, the company ventured into writing instruments, creating the first luxury ballpoint pen, the Classique at the request of Jackie Kennedy Onassis – more on that later. This diversification solidified S.T. Dupont's reputation as a purveyor of refined luxury accessories.

JACKIE’S STYLE AND INFLUENCE

To understand why her role in the popularisation of the Classique was so monumental, we must first grasp the scope of her influence in the fashion and luxury landscape of the time. Jackie Kennedy’s style was the epitome of effortless elegance, blending a classic sophistication with haute couture influences and her own personal style. As First Lady, she championed clean lines, structured silhouettes, and pastel hues, often seen in her signature Chanel-inspired suits, pillbox hats, and impeccably tailored dresses. Paired with pearls and elbow-length gloves, she set a new standard for political and high-society dressing, influencing generations of women.

Beyond the White House, Jackie Onassis embraced a more relaxed yet equally chic approach – think; wide-leg trousers, billowy maxi dresses, and oversized sunglasses that became her signature. She mastered the art of looking both poised and approachable, a balance that cemented her as a global fashion icon.

THE STORY OF THE CLASSIQUE

In 1962, during an official visit to the United States, André Malraux, then France’s Minister of Cultural Affairs, presented Jacqueline Kennedy with a gold S.T. Dupont Ligne 1 lighter, elegantly engraved with a “J.” This gift marked the beginning of the First Lady’s affection for the brand.

A decade later, now Jackie Onassis, she commissioned a matching pen to accompany her treasured lighter. S.T. Dupont had not yet ever produced writing instruments, nevertheless, the challenge was accepted. The result was the Classique (classic in French). Crafted from brass, with its signature vertical guilloche pattern inspired by the Ligne 1 lighter, the first luxury ballpoint pen got the perfect name Classique with its sharp lines and impeccable detailing, this pen became a symbol of 1970s design, placing S.T. Dupont among the leaders in the world of fine writing instruments. This groundbreaking design not only fulfilled Jackie’s request but also established S.T. Dupont as a leader in luxury writing instruments.

CLASSIQUE REIMAGINED

Fast forward to 2025, where the new Classique is revealed, retaining all the essence of its predecessor while offering a new refined and modern touch. What changed? The pen is now slightly thicker, enhancing both aesthetics and ergonomics. Crafted to the Golden Ratio, it delivers an exceptional writing experience, ensuring both comfort and precision.

Designed and manufactured in Faverges, Savoie, the new Classique is available in four sophisticated finishes, including options in brushed palladium and gold, or black, blue, and red lacquer, but also adorned with vertical and diagonal guilloche engravings, or contrasting clips for a striking modern touch.
