IACUBENCO: The art of dressing the space between form and freedom

Some designers begin with a silhouette. Others with a fabric. Carina Iacubenco begins with something less tangible: space.

That idea quietly runs through IACUBENCO, the French womenswear brand Carina Iacubenco founded in 2023. Rather than treating clothing as an object, the designer approaches it as a relationship between the body, movement and the space surrounding it. Here, minimalism is less about reduction than about proportion. The garments feel considered, allowing every line and every opening to become part of the composition.

Raised in Transnistria, Moldova, Carina grew up in a family where creativity shaped everyday life. Her mother is a designer, her grandfather was an architect, and both disciplines continue to echo throughout the brand. One brings an appreciation for craftsmanship and detail, the other a sensitivity to structure, balance and space.

When Carina moved to the French Riviera at the age of twenty, she set out to build a French fashion house grounded in timeless dressing rather than seasonal trends. That intention can still be felt throughout IACUBENCO today, from its carefully balanced silhouettes to its natural Italian fabrics, personally selected by the designer.

The house itself remains a family story. Alongside the ready-to-wear and eveningwear collections, handcrafted handbags and accessories created by Carina's mother continue to accompany the wardrobe, reinforcing the sense that IACUBENCO has grown through generations rather than around a single designer.

WHEN SIMPLICITY BECOMES A COMPOSITION

Minimalism has returned to fashion in many different forms over recent seasons. Often, it has been defined by subtraction. IACUBENCO takes a different approach. Rather than removing details, the collection considers how shape, volume and empty space interact with one another.

That idea finds its clearest expression in the house's latest collection.

Inspired by one of Carina's young daughter's drawings, the collection explores the dialogue between structure and fluidity. Open backs, sculptural cut-outs and exposed shoulders never read as decorative statements. Instead, they become part of the garment's architecture, allowing light, air and movement to complete the silhouette.

Throughout the collection, crisp linen introduces an almost architectural clarity, while fluid silk softens each look in motion. Neither element dominates. Instead, they rely on one another, creating garments that feel structured without becoming rigid.

The same balance extends into the palette. Creamy neutrals and deep black exist side by side, allowing shape and proportion to remain the focus rather than colour itself.

Perhaps the collection's most memorable gesture appears in the Garance dress, where cascading fringes inspired by Art Nouveau seem to extend the silhouette beyond the fabric itself. As the wearer moves, the garment changes with her, transforming decoration into movement.

CLOTHING THAT LEAVES ROOM FOR THE WEARER

Throughout the collection, one idea quietly emerges: clothing should never overpower the person wearing it. Instead, it should create space for individuality, allowing each woman to inhabit a silhouette in her own way. It is a philosophy that has guided Carina Iacubenco since the very beginning of the house.

"For me, beauty is born where form leaves room for individuality. The most beautiful thing a designer can create is a silhouette that doesn't restrict a woman's freedom, but allows her to be herself," says Carina Iacubenco.

Since making its debut during Paris Fashion Week in 2024, the house has quietly expanded its presence through presentations on the French Riviera, including Monaco, while its designs have appeared during the Cannes Film Festival. These appearances feel consistent with the brand's identity: understated rather than theatrical, confident without seeking spectacle.

More than introducing another interpretation of modern minimalism, IACUBENCO invites a slower way of looking. The collection rewards attention not through embellishment, but through construction, proportion and the subtle relationship between garment and body.

Sometimes the strongest silhouette is not the one that occupies the most space.

It is the one that understands exactly how to leave room for the woman wearing it.
