It was only a matter of time until Kevin Germanier, one of the most prominent designers on the Parisian fashion scene with a passion for extra sparkle, was invited to join the Couture schedule of Paris Fashion Week as a Guest Member. A Central Saint Martins graduate and a Taylor Swift favourite, the Swiss designer has been showing in Paris since 2018 and quickly became one of the hottest tickets on the busy men’s schedule turning the catwalk into a fashion carnival thanks to his eye-catching, bold, sustainable, and upcycled designs, mixing high fashion and imaginary sci-fi aesthetics, proving that luxury and eco-consciousness can co-exist.
2024 was a very special year for Kevin Germanier. He was chosen to design the costumes for the closing ceremony of the Parisian Olympic Games. He also presented for the first time his unique project with the LVMH group, the Prélude Collection, where he showed the fashion crowd that he is much more than a paillette evening wear designer who masters dramatic silhouettes: he can actually create daily wear, such as shirts, tops, trousers, and skirts, from luxury offcuts, and upcycled wool, leather and cotton.
For his first couture collection, which he showed in Paris closing the Haute Couture week, Kevin Germanier came up with the story of one perfect girl setting up a dinner table for her friends. According to his show notes, she is “the epitome of control, the woman everyone envies, and no one really knows. She’s more than a stereotype: she is a prisoner of her own perfection”. Suddenly she finds a magic pearl on the floor that changes her life once and forever: “She becomes a living sculpture, a manifesto of rebellion against toxic perfection”. La Femme Germanier.
How does this woman dress? She has a taste for sequined suits in bright pink and red, which she wears with a matching headband. She can also steal a satin jacket from her man’s wardrobe (that said, her man loves an extra dose of sparkle as well). She also adores knits, but in bright colours and with ruffles (this is something new for Germanier, inspired by his project with LVMH’s sustainability start-up Nona Source). She walks life paths in stilettos and thigh-high boots, both adorned with crystals and pearls. The more colours, the merrier! And when she goes out, she is like a firework (the last three looks of the collection were actually inspired by fireworks).
Backstage, Kevin Germanier explained that he used second-hand garments and leftovers from workshops in countries such as Brazil and India. For the first time, he also worked with artisans from the Philippines and Kazakhstan.
"My client is not just a celebrity; it's literally a woman who just loves fashion and she wants to go to have tea with her friends looking fabulous," he added. Bravo, Kevin Germanier!
