Jonathan W Anderson always knows how to surprise his audience. This time was no exception: for Spring-Summer 2025 the Irish designer proposes exaggerated daily silhouettes, blanket coats, puffer jackets made out of knitting yarns, and a jaw-dropping collaboration with Guinness.
When it comes to JWA shows, even the most demanding critiques are satisfied: what they see on the runway is always refreshing and captures the zeitgeist. The new catwalk show, mixing both the menswear SS2025 collection and the womenswear Resort 2025, that the Irish designer presented in Milan was no exception.
“Are you ready for the hypnotherapy session? Close your eyes. Inhale. Exhale”, JW Anderson mused in his show notes. And presented an array of thought-provoking clothes, playing with silhouettes and proportions. A fashion hypnotherapy, indeed. There were duvet coats made of beautiful atlas blankets, styled with sunglasses to hide the models’ gazes. There were also denim dresses with extra large pockets to fit anything one could need for their daily adventures. Huge bomber jackets crafted from knitting yarns had their Instagram moment, and so did “typical British houses” from the show notes knitted on intarsia cashmere jackets and dresses. Other highlights included tunics embellished with colourful “balloons”, enormous ties and suede shirts with extra-large sleeves. At point absurd, but ultimately quite wearable, this collection was definitely the winner of Milan’s runways.
However maybe the most unexpected of JWA’s surprises was the collaboration with Guinness, the symbol of Ireland, which made everybody in the audience (both digital and IRL) smile. This fashion union looked so natural on the catwalk, that it left me thinking: why had these two amazing Irish icons never joined their forces before? Sweaters with iconic pints and eye-catching pearl embroideries will be available to purchase already in November. Set your alarms!
