This January, to bring awareness to their groundbreaking Re-Nylon initiative, the Italian brand launches a series of short films, made in collaboration with National Geographic CreativeWorks. Each episode will explore the origins and impact of Prada’s groundbreaking Re-Nylon collection across diverse regions, with upcoming features starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Sadie Sink and SEA BEYOND Goodwill ambassadors Valentina Gottlieb and Giovanni Chimienti, as well as local National Geographic experts.
What if you embarked on an Arctic adventure with Prada? The first film, already published on Prada’s social networks, "On Arctic Tides”, brings attention to the plastic pollution in Norway’s Lofoten Archipelago – a critical Arctic habitat impacted by ocean waste. A striking example of the Arctic’s beauty and vulnerability, Known for its dramatic landscapes, the area also serves as a stark reminder of how interconnected environmental systems are. Ocean currents bring waste from thousands of kilometres away, transforming pristine shores into repositories of human negligence.
Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, the episode ventures into the heart of environmental challenges faced in the region. Accompanied by environmental advocate Valentina Gottlieb and local expert Carl Höjman, Cumberbatch explores the devastating impact of unsustainable fishing practices, focusing on “ghost nets” – abandoned fishing nets carried by ocean currents that wreak havoc on marine life. These nets, along with tonnes of plastic waste, litter beaches, entangle sea creatures, and disrupt fragile ecosystems - a global issue that demands world’s attention and immediate action.
What is Re-Nylon?
To create the innovative Re-Nylon collection, Prada uses recycled nylon called ECONYL®, a regenerated nylon yarn that can be recycled an indefinite number of times without affecting the material’s quality. ECONYL® is derived from discarded fishing nets, ocean plastic, and landfill waste – in Cumberbatch’s words; “turning trash into treasure”, proving that fashion can lead the way in creating a circular economy.
But Prada’s vision doesn’t stop at recycling materials. The brand has committed 1% of proceeds from the Re-Nylon for SEA BEYOND collection to support its educational programme in partnership with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (UNESCO-IOC). Since its launch in 2019, SEA BEYOND has reached over 35,000 students globally, fostering ocean literacy and promoting sustainability. The programme includes training initiatives for younger generations, VR educational content for Prada’s 14,000 employees worldwide, and unique projects like the “Kindergarten of the Lagoon” in Venice, which connects preschool children with their local ecosystems.
What’s inside the collection?
The 2025 Edit of the Re-Nylon collection features 191 meticulously crafted pieces that seamlessly blend Prada's signature minimalism with modern sophistication.
