Ellen Hodakova Larsson of Hodakova won the LVMH Prize for young designers, while Duran Lantink was awarded the Karl Lagerfeld Special Jury Prize and Michael Stewart from Standing Ground received the inaugural Savoir-Faire Prize.
Hodakova
The main prize went to Swedish designer Ellen Hodakova Larsson, behind her namesake label Hodakova, awarded by Nathalie Portman, the ambassador of Miss Dior fragrance. This means that Hodakova will receive 400,000€ to develop her business, where she is in charge of almost everything from design and material sourcing to accounting, and one-year mentorship from the top LVMH executives.
Graduate of the Swedish School of Textiles, Hodakova is the first Swedish designer to get into the final stage of the LVMH Prize. Her witty and elegant designs have caught the attention of different celebrities, including Cate Blanchett, Lady Gaga, Emma Corrin and Dua Lipa. Ellen is known for her devotion to sustainability and produces everything locally in Sweden, in Borås and Stockholm. She often calls herself an innovator, rather than a designer and works exclusively with upcycled and used materials such as belts, spoons, staplers, dried flower petals or deadstock fabrics from bigger Swedish fashion and design companies. It can be anything, honestly, as long as it’s not something that has been produced for the first time, and this revolutionary vision makes her stand out.
“Since I founded Hodakova in 2021 I have met a lot of resistance when it comes to our business model, but today I can proudly tell you that every piece from Hodakova is upcycled – this prize proves that the world now is ready for the first sustainable fashion house,’ the designer said after winning the award.
Excited to see more? Ellen Hodakova Larsson will show her newest collection off-schedule during Paris Fashion Week on September 24.
Duran Lantink
Winner of the runner-up Karl Lagerfeld Special Jury Prize, presented by Dior Beauty Ambassador Robert Pattinson, Dutch designer Duran Lantink has taken over the hearts of fashion enthusiasts with his sustainable, yet very geometrical designs, where humour meets elegance. Once you have seen them, you will never forget them. His fanbase includes Beyoncé and Billie Eilish.
Based between Amsterdam and Paris, Lantink put sustainability at the heart of his avant-garde designs: in his collections, he fuses pre-loved pieces, deadstock and new sustainable materials. For Duran the design is a community affair, so he works with several homeless communities in Amsterdam.
What does it mean to win the second Prize? Lantink will receive similar mentorship for one year from the top executives of the LVMH group as the main prize winner, and also 200,000€ to grow his business.
Duran is a part of the official PFW calendar; he will present his SS25 collection on September 29.
Standing Ground
Fashion enthusiasts know Irish designer Michael Stewart from Lulu Kennedy’s talent incubator Fashion East, where he revealed his eye-catching Standing Ground designs for the very first time in 2022.
A Royal College of Art graduate, Michael initially wanted to be an artist but then his passion for fashion won, and he chose a fashion course. Stewart focuses mainly on eveningwear and loves referencing the Ancient world and geology in his collections. He made himself a name for his couture sculptural drapped designs with padded bands and beaded pleats, adored by the likes of Imaan Hammam and Salma Hayek.
So it comes as no surprise that he received the first Savoir-Faire award and will bring home to London 200,000€ to reinforce his business. He will also receive special mentorship guidance, focused on craftsmanship and transmission of savoir-faire from the LVMH Maisons.
Standing Ground is now part of London Fashion Week and will be presenting its SS25 collection on September 14.
