It’s one of the most important news to start the year on the right note: Takashi Murakami’s designs for Louis Vuitton, aka the most iconic collaboration of the early 2000s, is back in an exquisite re-edition capsule that reimagines and updates the original collection, featuring 200 items including accessories and perfumes.
Initiated by the Louis Vuitton creative director of the time, Marc Jacobs, the first Takashi Murakami collab dates back to 2003, when the French luxury brand asked the Japanese artist to reinterpret the iconic Louis Vuitton Monogram pattern. Back then it was the first time the signature motif was reworked for the leather goods and accessories. Now, the colourful Murakami version of the pattern is back not only on Maison’s most renowned and coveted leather goods and accessories but also on silk scarves, sunglasses, belts, wallets, fashion jewellery, shoes, perfumes and suitcases.
So what’s in stock? The Maison’s emblematic City Bags including the Keepall, the Coussin, the Dauphine, the OnTheGo and the Speedy (in the drop, there are more than 33 versions of the bag, to be precise), have all been adorned with the Monogram Multicolore, interlocking LV and floral motifs in 33 different colours. Alma BB Bags and silk Carré scarves have been transformed with the LV Hands logo, while the Keepall 45, the Mini Square Trunk, sneakers, keyrings and a skateboard all feature a profile of Superflat Panda, one of Muramami’s charming alter-egos. Other highlights include Attrape-Rêves and Imagination perfume bottles and their cylindrical packaging embellished with Superflat smiley flowers and Superflat Panda, and Capucines bags reimagined for the occasion with Murakami’s very favourite characters. Bref, the collection is full of collectable pieces to be cherished as the historical Murakami x LV drops - yesterday, today and forever.
But that’s not all. Paying homage to this enduring creative bond between the Japanese icon and the French Maison, the accompanying campaign stars American actor, singer and Louis Vuitton House Ambassador, Zendaya, in a series of playful and audacious images created by renowned Dutch photographers, Inez and Vinoodh. The perfect embodiment of the whimsical collaboration’s modern energy and creative spirit, Zendaya wears pieces from the collection, while playfully interacting with Takashi Murakami’s fun and fantastical artworks created exclusively for the Louis Vuitton × Murakami re-edition – all framed within a series of epic and evocative cityscapes. Also, for the launch of the collection the artist installed one of his golden flower sculptures in the gardens of the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, for everyone to see and adore.
The first chapter of Louis Vuitton × Murakami re-edition capsule is available to order worldwide from January 1, 2025. A second chapter, focusing on the artist’s perfect-for-spring Cherry Blossom pattern, will be launched in March 2025. Stay in the know.
